How Does This Papermaking School Compare?

I did some research, and for you get this same level of education outside of academia, you’d have to take at least 6 weeklong workshops, if not many more. A typical in-person, weeklong papermaking workshop can cost you $2000 after the class fee, lodging, and travel.

Let’s do the math. $2000 x 6 workshops = $12,000.

The Ultimate Papermaking School has a $12,000 value.

How It Works

The Ultimate Papermaking School for Artists™️ is taught in an online classroom where you’ll learn creative papermaking through the Paperslurry Methodology™️. 🪄

  • HOW TO ACCESS - You can log in and access the video masterclasses on your own schedule, at any time. You’ll have access to the school for 3 years after your enrollment date.

  • STRUCTURE - In each of the 10 masterclasses, you’ll watch the pre-recorded video demonstrations in order. Then, finish each masterclass with an Experiment to try out what you’ve learned.

  • SCHEDULE - There are no live meetings or live demonstrations. It is a self-study school, where you go through the masterclasses on your own schedule.

  • HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE - You work at your own pace. Each masterclass will take about 10 hours to complete, including watching the video lessons and doing the Experiments.

  • IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS - I don’t offer 1:1 or group coaching at this time (my plate is very full 😅). There are no open comment/question sections or live meetings. This is a self-study program, meaning I designed this course intentionally so you can learn on your own. Don’t worry, my demos and explanations are very detailed and thorough—I think you’ll be pleased! If you really have a burning question or need my 1:1 advice, use my Online Papermaking Consultation service.

You are such a great teacher. You are super clear, straight-forward and you show us what the process is, while adding layers of complexity. Since I’m self-taught your class is really helpful and valuable to my practice. I’ve been enjoying your assignments and I love your creative and fun way of approaching the art of papermaking. Thank you for sharing this knowledge.

Students Are Saying:

This course is AWESOME. It’s well-paced, informative, easy to follow, and enjoyable. Perfect for anyone who wants to learn papermaking but is overwhelmed and not sure where to start. Not to worry: May’s got you covered!
— Heather
I think this is the first online class where I completed every lesson. The class is well organized and each lesson builds a new skill. I am a printmaker and I have successfully learned to make good quality paper I am using in my practice.
— Sarah Evans
I have to tell you how much I appreciate your thorough and comprehensive course. As I am simultaneously preparing for my solo show next April, I have already absorbed so much into my art practice.
— Felice
May’s course is very comprehensive, giving information on many aspects of paper making. Her videos are very detailed and easy to understand. She includes a lengthy list of materials and optional substitutes. I’ve made paper before so it was a refresher. I didn’t know that I would like making natural dyes. I also am enjoying embedding materials in two pieces of paper and making the paper sculptural. Fun! Highly recommended.
— Vivian Pratt, mixed media artist
I am very much a novice in papermaking. I read all kinds of things and research answers to issues when they arise, but I’ve not had a comprehensive base on which to build. This course has provided that base, but the ah-ha came when I recognized the need and the value to having a sequential structure for all the information. So, form over function and process over product are critical to satisfaction with the work—-this has been my treasure!

Though I haven’t yet completed all lessons, each one I have done the information has been clearly presented and demonstrated. The sessions are expertly designed to increase both knowledge and skills in a concise, logically progressive manner. I highly recommend this course to both beginner and beyond students, as there is much to learn in each class…
— Susan Pierce
Just want to send my thanks for your online paper school. It really gave new life to my fallow practice and now I’ve got this crazy sculpture to cover in paper.
— Nick Costantino
Class is complete with all the possibilities for making paper. Some I’ve explored on my own but other techniques like grid papers is something I’ve always wondered about. And making thin papers with abaca and formation aid is eye opening. May covers all the ins and outs of color and pulp painting. Very complete class. I’m enjoying it and learning so much!
— Julie Proctor
I highly recommend May’s paper making course. The short videos are very informative and the course is well-structured and extensive. I can’t get all the materials in Australia but May is aware of this and suggests alternatives that work well, e.g. no dyes or retention aids - reuse coloured paper. I’m into using recycled paper. You can do so much with it. May stresses the importance of experimentation and play. I love that as I’ve learnt to make smaller, satisfying samples. They’re prototypes for future work. I’ve learnt what works and what doesn’t, e.g. don’t try to put gelatine sizing on your newly formed paper with newspaper underneath to protect the table! It acts like glue.

Your masterclasses are tops. It is very well designed. The videos are just the right length. Lots of short, targeted videos are far better than longer ones. I love them! And the supporting notes are great to go back to check information alongside my own notes.
— Velma Beaglehole
I really appreciated the supply list, interactive database, and PDF checklist. This was so helpful for me in finding supplies and giving me ideas and alternative supplies. Thank you for the effort and time you put into creating it.
— Sam Milford
I love what you are teaching us in this course. I’m new to paper as an art form. I started August 2023. I have learned an enormous amount of information. Seeing how it’s done is way better than reading instructions. The pulp painting is endlessly enjoyable and rich in mindfulness. Thank you, thank you for this course. It’s incredible.
— Mary Hahn Ward
I like your course because it is realistic for someone who wants to do home or small studio papermaking, and does not have access to a Hollander beater. I like your extensive discussion of equipment, and your demos are great. I can clearly see what you are doing. What’s valuable is that I can keep coming back to it if I’m unclear on something. When you take a class in person, when it’s over, you just have your notes.

To me, it was clearly worth the cost, because it clarifies what I already know, as a beginning, papermaker, and enhances my knowledge and understanding of the various processes.🙂
— Carol LaBorie
What I loved the most was just listening to all the knowledge you have on papermaking and artistry. Highly recommend this course to anyone. You learn the tricks of trade. Appreciate your knowledge.
— Laurie Kerr
I’ve been making paper for 28 years and was starting to feel a little unmotivated, a little bored. Your class is giving me the boost I needed. I’ve really enjoyed it!
— Donna
