Youโll get a curated group of techniques that are beginner-friendlyโbut donโt look elementary at all.
Youโll learn how to embed (a.k.a. trap) objects in-between the paper, and how that opens up a world of conceptual possibilities.
Youโll also get my guide to including other materials into the pulp itself, so that you can achieve an all-over, confetti-like effect OR complete finished-looking collaged artworks.
-
One of the bigger mysteries in the universe is how to color pulp. The Ultimate Papermaking School for Artists dedicates an entire masterclass on how to do just thatโeven down to details like how choosing your fiber source here actually matters.
Youโll learn how to pigment pulp into a range of colorsโand why this method is ideal for achieving brilliant, long-lasting colors.
Youโll also learn how to mix different colors of pulp and types of fibers to achieve a wider range of paper tones and textures

Once youโve pigmented your pulps, you have what you need to make pulp paintingsโpaintings that are made entirely of paper. No paint is involved, only your pigmented pulp.
Youโll first learn how to achieve abstract, watercolor-like effects in your pulp paintings using your pigmented pulps.
Then, youโll learn how to get fine lines and sharp edges in your pulp paintings.
Iโll also teach you my reverse mark-making method of pulp paintingโan elegant and beautiful approach that I love for several reasons.
Finally master the โblowoutโ method, using my way that doesnโt leave you soaked with water!
Youโll learn how to do veils and gradientsโusing pulp like silkscreen printing.
And finallyโfor those of you who like breaking all the rulesโhow to make free-form pulp paintings that break free from the rectangular format of traditional painting.
-
This is where we really push the possibilities of papermaking into outer space with a selection of techniques that allow paperโs material presence to sing like Celine Dion.
Youโll learn a ridiculously easy way to emboss papers with a range of patterned surface textures.
Iโll teach you how to make woven grid paperโa technique unique to hand papermaking
And, youโll learn how to make COLOSSAL, LARGE PAPERS (as big as your tablespace or floorspace) without having to invest in a larger paper mould & deckle. HOORAY! GO BIG OR GO HOME, YโALL.
-
Iโll first teach you how to make paper pulp casts through 3 methods: (1) creating thicccc, low-relief paper casts the quick and easy way, and (2) making fully three dimensional paper casts using found objects or removable armatures as your mold, and (3) the simplest pulp casting technique.
Youโll also learn the dipping method to create paper sculptures, and why itโs one of the most irresistible ways to completely transform wire, string, and more into fabulous works of art.
Iโll also teach you my special โdrapingโ method to make beautifully organic looking sculptures.
And finally, youโll learn ways to securely โwrapโ objects and armatures with wet sheets of paper, an easy technique that combines beautifully with the previous sculptural approaches.
-
Itโs MAGIC. A watermark is a hidden design, image, or mark within a paper that is only visible when held up to a light. Youโll get an overview of watermarks, understand how they exactly work, and see the creative possibilities of this subtle and magical technique.
Youโll learn how to make your very own hidden watermark design with 3 approaches: linear watermarks, graphic watermarks, and my very own โwater drawings.โ
And, youโll learn how to optimize your vat for watermarks.

How Does This Papermaking School Compare?
I did some research, and for you get this same level of education outside of academia, youโd have to take at least 6 weeklong workshops, if not many more. A typical in-person, weeklong papermaking workshop can cost you $2000 after the class fee, lodging, and travel.
Letโs do the math. $2000 x 6 workshops = $12,000.
The Ultimate Papermaking School has a $12,000 value.

โYou are such a great teacher. You are super clear, straight-forward and you show us what the process is, while adding layers of complexity. Since Iโm self-taught your class is really helpful and valuable to my practice. Iโve been enjoying your assignments and I love your creative and fun way of approaching the art of papermaking. Thank you for sharing this knowledge.โ
Students Are Saying:
โThis course is AWESOME. Itโs well-paced, informative, easy to follow, and enjoyable. Perfect for anyone who wants to learn papermaking but is overwhelmed and not sure where to start. Not to worry: Mayโs got you covered!โ
โI think this is the first online class where I completed every lesson. The class is well organized and each lesson builds a new skill. I am a printmaker and I have successfully learned to make good quality paper I am using in my practice. โ
โI have to tell you how much I appreciate your thorough and comprehensive course. As I am simultaneously preparing for my solo show next April, I have already absorbed so much into my art practice. โ
โMayโs course is very comprehensive, giving information on many aspects of paper making. Her videos are very detailed and easy to understand. She includes a lengthy list of materials and optional substitutes. Iโve made paper before so it was a refresher. I didnโt know that I would like making natural dyes. I also am enjoying embedding materials in two pieces of paper and making the paper sculptural. Fun! Highly recommended. โ
โI am very much a novice in papermaking. I read all kinds of things and research answers to issues when they arise, but Iโve not had a comprehensive base on which to build. This course has provided that base, but the ah-ha came when I recognized the need and the value to having a sequential structure for all the information. So, form over function and process over product are critical to satisfaction with the workโ-this has been my treasure!
Though I havenโt yet completed all lessons, each one I have done the information has been clearly presented and demonstrated. The sessions are expertly designed to increase both knowledge and skills in a concise, logically progressive manner. I highly recommend this course to both beginner and beyond students, as there is much to learn in each classโฆโ
โJust want to send my thanks for your online paper school. It really gave new life to my fallow practice and now Iโve got this crazy sculpture to cover in paper.โ
โClass is complete with all the possibilities for making paper. Some Iโve explored on my own but other techniques like grid papers is something Iโve always wondered about. And making thin papers with abaca and formation aid is eye opening. May covers all the ins and outs of color and pulp painting. Very complete class. Iโm enjoying it and learning so much!โ
โI highly recommend Mayโs paper making course. The short videos are very informative and the course is well-structured and extensive. I canโt get all the materials in Australia but May is aware of this and suggests alternatives that work well, e.g. no dyes or retention aids - reuse coloured paper. Iโm into using recycled paper. You can do so much with it. May stresses the importance of experimentation and play. I love that as Iโve learnt to make smaller, satisfying samples. Theyโre prototypes for future work. Iโve learnt what works and what doesnโt, e.g. donโt try to put gelatine sizing on your newly formed paper with newspaper underneath to protect the table! It acts like glue.
Your masterclasses are tops. It is very well designed. The videos are just the right length. Lots of short, targeted videos are far better than longer ones. I love them! And the supporting notes are great to go back to check information alongside my own notes.โ
โI really appreciated the supply list, interactive database, and PDF checklist. This was so helpful for me in finding supplies and giving me ideas and alternative supplies. Thank you for the effort and time you put into creating it.โ
โI love what you are teaching us in this course. Iโm new to paper as an art form. I started August 2023. I have learned an enormous amount of information. Seeing how itโs done is way better than reading instructions. The pulp painting is endlessly enjoyable and rich in mindfulness. Thank you, thank you for this course. Itโs incredible.โ
โI like your course because it is realistic for someone who wants to do home or small studio papermaking, and does not have access to a Hollander beater. I like your extensive discussion of equipment, and your demos are great. I can clearly see what you are doing. Whatโs valuable is that I can keep coming back to it if Iโm unclear on something. When you take a class in person, when itโs over, you just have your notes.
To me, it was clearly worth the cost, because it clarifies what I already know, as a beginning, papermaker, and enhances my knowledge and understanding of the various processes.๐โ
โWhat I loved the most was just listening to all the knowledge you have on papermaking and artistry. Highly recommend this course to anyone. You learn the tricks of trade. Appreciate your knowledge.โ

Yes, the school will be accessible for 3 years after your enrollment date, for you to login and access anytime through your account.
-
Paperslurry does not provide any materials, supplies, or kits. Why? A major goal for students is to build up your own papermaking set-up and know where to find tools and supplies in the future.
The first masterclass is dedicated to establishing foundational papermaking set-up, to be used for the entire program. Youโll learn what you need to get and where to get it.
-
This online course is in English, and is a combination of videos and text.
The videos have auto-generated subtitles in English or Spanish.
If youโd like video subtitles in something other than English or Spanish, please send your request to May at may@paperslurry.com.
-
No, this school is focused on techniques for art making using purchased and recycled fibers. (Though keep in mind, all paper is made from plants originally! Even your recycled paper comes from mostly trees. Trees are plants.)
Since plant papermaking is both AWESOME and A WHOLE OTHER THING TO GET INTO, in the future I will be offering a separate online school how to make paper from plants.
-
No experience in papermaking is necessary to take this training school. I'll take you from the basics all the way to more advanced techniques with clear, detailed demonstrations that make you feel like you can DEFINITELY do this. This school is designed for the curious who want to incorporate papermaking into their creative life.
-
Nope. The fact that youโre here reading this is evidence that you have a natural curiosity, and curious people have the potential to be GREAT artists. So youโll learn a lot and find joy in papermaking even if you donโt identify as an artist, yet.
-
This school is AWESOME and I know you'll love it, so you won't even need this guarantee! But I'm not a creep, so if for any reason you are not satisfied with your purchase, you may request a 100% refund within 30 days of your enrollment by emailing me at may@paperslurry.com.

Each masterclass will take around 10 hours to complete. This includes watching the video lessons and completing the Pulp-y Experiments.
The beauty of learning online in a self-study program is that you can go at your own pace and your own schedule. So, you aren't held back by any live meetings, and you also don't feel like you're falling behind. I recommend dedicating 1 morning, afternoon, or evening per week to watching the video lessons and trying the techniques. You can schedule in more or less time than thatโeven 1 hour per week sets you in the right direction.
-
Yes! It may seem like a hurdle because papermaking is a hands-on process, but not only is it possible, it is more optimal because you can watch my demonstrations as many times as you want, and you get PDF demonstration notes for each masterclass. And, you learn at your own pace and create your own set-up for papermaking.
-
Nope! The school is designed to be completed in order, and it is not possible to breakup the different masterclasses.
The most successful artists know that there is always more to learn, especially from different teachers. You never know what you might miss or learn from someone new that could totally transform your artwork! Or, make your life easier when you are making paper or trying a specific technique. The second you start assuming that you know everything about a topic, means that you're not staying curious and won't continue to grow and develop as a papermaker.
-
Yes, if youโre looking to level up your creative papermaking techniques by learning my specialized techniques. Many of the lessons demonstrate techniques that I don't teach anywhere else. There are unique approaches that I've tested and developed. You simply can't learn many of these methods anywhere else!
-
I donโt offer 1:1 or group coaching at this time (my plate is very full ๐ ). There are no open comment/question sections or live meetings. -
No worries! I made an 'Interactive Supply Database' with several substitutions for each supply. So, you can use what's available to you. Around 50% of my students are not in the USA, so this course is designed to work no matter where you are in the world.
-
Nope! At this price point, you are already getting an amazing deal to learn aaaallll the artistic papermaking techniques. To learn the same amount of things, you'd have to spend A LOT more $$$$.
A typical in-depth, weeklong papermaking workshop usually starts at $800 just for the class fee, never mind travel, lodging, and food costs for in-person workshops. Andโyou wouldn't get a comprehensive base that this school provides. You'd have to take at least 6 workshops to learn everything that this school covers. Let's say you would spend $2000 on an in-person 1-week workshop, after all is said and done. That's $2000 x 6 = $12,000 if you go the in-person workshop route. Yikes!
This online school is the most affordable way to become a brilliant papermaking artist. There is simply no where else for you to learn this much at this price point.
-
Enrollment opens up 1-2 times a year.
So if you THINK you don't have time to watch the lessons, I recommend that you enroll now and start when you are ready, because you also get 3 years of on-demand access to go through the school (there are no live meetings).
Creativity shouldn't have to be something that you have to "wait until later" to do. Creativity should be part of your lifeโand even 1 hour a week will help feed your creative soul.
