You know how sometimes it feels like you’re making handmade paper in a void?

In my day-to-day, I’m not in the presence of a whole gaggle of hand papermakers—not to say that my dog, partner, and resident front-garden rabbit aren’t awesome.

And you know how you just need a bit more FUN and DELIGHT and HANDMADE PAPER in your life?

Well, there’s a very cool project that a couple of papermakers are doing that is creating interconnections in the hand papermaking world. If you haven't heard of the Handmade Paper Exchange, hold onto your wigs.

The ​HANDMADE PAPER EXCHANGE​ is an annual exchange of full sheets of handmade paper, run by the most excellent Sophia Hotzler and Genevieve Lapp (how are they so organized, tell me your secrets).

Basically how it works is:

  1. You mail Sophia and Genevieve 12 handmade papers you’ve made.

  2. They’ll send you back 10 different, random handmade papers that are made by other people in the Exchange.

As of now, the Handmade Paper Exchange is in its 3rd year, and here’s to hopefully many, many more, because I love this project. It’s like a Christmas cookie swap, but way better IMO.

The Handmade Paper Exchange participation fee is pay-what-you-can, and the suggested tiers are:

  • No wage - free! $0

  • Low wage $10

  • Regular price and non-US $30

  • Papermaking Benefactor $50

  • Handmade Paper Super-Fan $100
